Our lecture will deal with the phenomenon of crime during immigration, focusing on the issue of human trafficking and prostitution. Dr Haim Sperber – professor in Western Galilee College – will talk about the unique path of Jewish female emancipation in Eastern and Central Europe.

Crime and Gender in Jewish Emigration from Europe, 1880-1924 – a Non-Feminist Modernization Process
Dr. Haim Sperber’s talk will be about the unique path of Jewish female emancipation in Eastern and Central Europe. While in Western Europe and North America the modernization of the situation of women has been in line with general social processes, in Eastern and Central Europe we can encounter other trends. The Jews emigrating from these areas were mostly men, so the women left behind had to take care of themselves in order to make a living and sustain the family. This phenomenon, which is still unknown to many, is an essential historical addition to the knowledge of the parallel feminist struggles that took place in the West in the later decades of the 19th century and especially in the early 1900s.
Dr. Sperber is a professor at the Western Galilee College in Israel. His visit was initiated by the academic committee of the international Jewish organization Partnership2Gether (P2G) Western Galilee, and connects Budapest with the Western Galilee and 16 North American Jewish communities.

Bűnözés és gender az európai zsidó emigrációban, 1880-1924 – a női modernizáció nem feminista formái
Dr. Haim Sperber előadásában a zsidó női emancipáció egyedülálló útjáról lesz szó Kelet- és Közép-Európában. Míg Nyugat-Európában és Észak-Amerikában a nők helyzetének modernizációja az általános társadalmi folyamatokkal összhangban történt, addig Kelet- és Közép-Európában más tendenciákkal találkozhatunk. Az e térségekből emigráló zsidók főleg férfiak voltak, így az utánuk maradt asszonyoknak egyedül kellett gondoskodniuk a család megélhetése és fenntartása érdekében. E sokak számára máig ismeretlen jelenség elengedhetetlen történelmi adalék a nyugaton a 19. század későbbi évtizedeiben és különösen az 1900 -as évek elején párhuzamosan folyó feminista küzdelmek megismeréséhez.
Dr. Sperber az izraeli Western Galilee College professzora. Látogatás a Budapestet Nyugat-Galileával és 16 észak-amerikai zsidó közösséggel összekötő Partnership2Gether Western Galilee nemzetközi szervezet akadémiai tanácsának köszönhetően jön létre.
